Plastic cleanup begins on the Zonzamas hillside

A measure by the Cabildo de Lanzarote, with the aim of "guaranteeing better waste management" with the "necessary personnel and resources"

Visit of the Cabildo of Lanzarote to Zonzamas

This Monday, a cleaning sweep of thousands of bags and other plastic waste began in the Zonzamas caldera, material deposited in the surroundings of the slope between Argana, San Bartolomé and Tahíche. A measure carried out by the Cabildo de Lanzarote, through the Waste area, coordinated by Domingo Cejas.

Oswaldo Betancort, together with the vice president, Jacobo Medina, and the head of the area, Domingo Cejas, visited the area, checking 'in situ' the "regrettable" image presented by the slope, due to "how the wind has displaced the waste from the Zonzamas landfill outwards", reports the Island Government.

During the visit, Betancort thanked the institutional collaboration of the Arrecife and Teguise City Councils, "to be able to act immediately with personnel from employment plans, but while we are now addressing an emergency to clean up this area as soon as possible, waste management in Lanzarote involves planning and investing so that this image does not happen again and to prevent plastics from flying with facilities in conditions in the Environmental Complex".

"We cannot allow an island 'Biosphere Reserve' to look like this, and therefore, we will put all the necessary personnel and resources to restore order", said Jacobo Medina.

"With regard to the proper management of the waste generated, it is worth highlighting and emphasizing different areas of action that require immediate attention", explained Cejas in reference to the provision of the necessary infrastructures in terms of waste management and adaptation and improvement of existing treatment processes.

"When we refer to the Zonzamas Environmental Complex, we must understand that it constitutes the main facility for the treatment of non-hazardous waste generated in Lanzarote and La Graciosa, since it is the only one existing and to which almost all of it is destined".

However, this Environmental Complex presents "different deficiencies and needs" that demand "urgent" actions to correct certain deviations from its Integrated Environmental Authorization (IEA), guarantee better management of waste and reduce the landfill tax as much as possible", concluded Domingo Cejas.
