Lanzarote will host, from September 24 to 26, the VII International Congress of History of Journalism and Social Communication in the Canary Islands and Macaronesia, an academic event that will bring together more than 40 researchers, professors, and specialists and which counts on the participation of 20 universities, research institutions, heritage centers, and cultural entities. The meeting, organized around the Associated Center of the UNED Lanzarote, positions the island as a space for debate on the historical, cultural, and communicative links between the Canary Islands, Macaronesia, and other territories. The program combines three communication sessions, opening and closing conferences, as well as cultural activities and tours linked to the heritage of Arrecife and Teguise.
The first day, Thursday, September 24, will begin with the reception of the congress participants and the inaugural ceremony at the Associated Center of the UNED Lanzarote, located in the old Parador de Turismo in Arrecife. The inaugural lecture will be given by Dr. Marialva Barbosa, from the Universidade Federal de Rio de Janeiro, with the presentation titled "Diálogos Brasil-Cabo Verde: narrativas de re-existências," at 10:00 AM at the UNED center. During the sessions, issues covering the historical evolution of the press, media narratives, and social communication in the Canary Islands and Macaronesia will be addressed. Among the planned topics are Portuguese printed resistance during the period 1956-1975; journalistic and ideological relations between the Canary Islands and Cape Verde; communication and maritime signage in the Atlantic; and the use of the Official Bulletin as a source for ethnographic studies.
The program also pays special attention to island memory and cultural heritage. The communications will analyze the figure of José Clavijo y Fajardo on the tricentennial of his birth, the historical press of El Hierro and La Gomera, the journalistic and cultural work linked to La Aurora, the role of pioneering women of socialism in Tenerife, and the journalistic coverage of Juan Negrín in the Gran Canaria press. Likewise, the magazine Aguayro, the theatrical criticism of Francisco González Díaz, and the traditional architecture of Lanzarote and the Chinijo archipelago through the eyes of photographer Francisco Rojas Fariña, Fachico, will be studied. The congress also incorporates perspectives focused on contemporary communication challenges. Among these are the analysis of disinformation, conspiracy beliefs, and the perception of fake news; media frameworks on housing in the Canary Islands between 2020 and 2025; institutional narrative, protocol, and symbolism; and the relationship between communication, tourism, and territory through the Lanzarote Tourism Think Tank.
The research completes a program of a strongly interdisciplinary nature, with contributions on historical archaeology, documentation and heritage, native populations of the Canary Islands, narratives of solidarity in José Saramago, relations between South Korea and the Canary Islands reflected by the regional press, and the history of maritime services between the Canary Islands and the Peninsula.
The closing conference of the first day will be given at 7:00 PM by Dr. Concha Langa Nuño, from the University of Seville, under the title "Invisible in journalism. The other story of Spanish journalists." On Friday, September 25, Dr. Celso Almuiña Fernández, from the University of Valladolid, will close the second day with "Facing the new technological republic. From the control of discourses to the creation of a single narrative." On Saturday, September 26, the program will include a visit to the headquarters of the César Manrique Foundation in Taro de Tahíche, a tour of the historic center of Teguise, and the closing conference of the congress, by Dr. Carmen Espejo Cala, from the University of Seville, titled "Clavijo y Fajardo: a journalist among the journalists of his time," at 12:00 PM in the municipal theater of Teguise.
The International Congress of History of Journalism and Social Communication in the Canary Islands began its journey in 2010 in La Laguna, but in these years it has also passed through Adeje, La Palma, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and Santa María de Guía. The organization is in the hands of teachers linked to the Journalism Degree of the University of La Laguna, associated in the non-profit association Ediciones Densura, and in this edition the Associated Center of the UNED of Lanzarote also collaborates.
The congress also has the endorsement of the Association of Communication Historians, AsHisCom, and has the support of several local institutions such as the General Directorate of Cultural Heritage of the Government of the Canary Islands, the Cabildo de Lanzarote, and the city councils of Arrecife and Teguise, and the César Manrique Foundation.
