The Directorate General of Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands has put out for public consultation the declaration of public utility of a project to install another photovoltaic park in the town of Mácher, in Tías.
This private initiative contemplates installing 6,288 photovoltaic panels, sixteen inverters, a transformation center, and an underground evacuation line on rustic land.
The initiative has been promoted again by the Madrid-based company RS Iberia 23 SL and contemplates the expropriation of 39 plots of land. This entity is also behind the Tías I project, which plans to install 1,680 solar panels and expropriate 36 plots of land in the town. As announced by the Directorate General of Energy of the Government of the Canary Islands, the company plans to submit both projects to a joint simplified environmental assessment.
The Tías City Council has publicly shown its rejection of this initiative, which aims to be located on rustic land. From the municipal government group, formed by PSOE and Podemos, they demand that the political parties that lead the regional Executive, Coalición Canaria (CC) and the Partido Popular (PP), "immediately cease speculation with the island of Lanzarote and, in particular, with the municipality of Tías".
The local mayor, José Juan Cruz Saavedra, has been forceful in denouncing that private business projects cannot continue to be given administrative viability at the cost of leaving the territory unprotected. "It is inadmissible that the Government of the Canary Islands continues to open the door to initiatives of this type, which steal land and landscape from the people of our land to put them at the exclusive service and interest of speculators and monopoly companies," the mayor insisted.
Likewise, Cruz Saavedra has pointed directly to the responsibility of the Presidency of the Cabildo and the regional Executive: "Oswaldo Betancort has deceived the people of Lanzarote with his actions. If he truly has influence within Coalición Canaria, what he must do is tell the Government of the Canary Islands to stop once and for all and curb the reckless management of the Minister of Ecological Transition, Mariano Zapata".
The Tías City Council has reiterated that the transition to renewable energies must be carried out in an orderly, sustainable, and planned manner, respecting land classification, agricultural protection, and the will of the residents, and announces that it will present all necessary allegations and appeals to prevent these types of impositions from moving forward in the Mácher plain.
