Four professionals from Family and Community Medicine of Primary Care from the Lanzarote Health Area, attached to the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, have published a scientific paper in the journal ‘Medicina de Familia. SEMERGEN’ in which they analyze the new perspectives in the approach to dyslipidemia and, especially, the role played by PCSK9 inhibitors in patients with high cardiovascular risk.
The publication, carried out by the specialists in Family Medicine, Yulene Larrañaga and María Yanes, and residents Susana Espinosa and Carla Betancor, constitutes a sample of the research activity carried out by the professionals of the Lanzarote Health Services Management and their commitment to continuous training and updating of knowledge that contributes to improving the prevention and healthcare of cardiovascular diseases.
Therapeutic advances
The paper reviews the available scientific evidence on new therapeutic alternatives for the control of LDL cholesterol, one of the main risk factors related to the onset of cardiovascular diseases. In this context, the authors highlight the evolution of treatment strategies and the role of PCSK9 inhibitors, especially indicated in patients with high or very high cardiovascular risk who do not manage to reach their cholesterol goals with conventional treatments.
The professionals point out that these treatments constitute one of the most relevant therapeutic advances of recent decades in the approach to dyslipidemia, as they allow for significant and sustained reductions in LDL cholesterol and decrease the risk of major cardiovascular events, especially in people with high risk.
Prevention is fundamental
The article emphasizes that the incorporation of new treatments does not replace basic prevention measures and therefore, they underline the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyle habits.
The authors highlight the essential role of Primary Care professionals in the early detection of patients with cardiovascular disease, familial hypercholesterolemia, very high LDL cholesterol levels, diabetes with organ damage, or advanced kidney disease, to establish more intensive prevention strategies without needing to wait for a cardiovascular event to occur and to carry out their subsequent follow-up.
The work concludes that PCSK9 inhibitors represent a valuable therapeutic tool for those patients with cardiovascular risk, within a comprehensive strategy that must combine pharmacological treatment, risk factor control, and the promotion of healthy lifestyles.
