A project by the Management of Health Services of the Lanzarote Health Area on incentivizing vaccination in schools has been the winner of one of the III AEV Awards presented this Thursday, May 28, at the Royal National Academy of Medicine of Spain by the Spanish Association of Vaccinology, to which a total of twenty-seven initiatives competed.

Specifically, the project ‘School vaccination without barriers’ has been awarded first prize in the Public Health Best Practices category. This is an intervention developed by the Technical Unit of the Primary Care Directorate of the Lanzarote Health Management with the aim of improving childhood flu vaccination coverage.

To this end, educational videos were used, aimed at families and students, which were shown in the island's schools before the flu vaccination process.

Video Content

One of the videos provided organizational information with details such as dates, procedure, informed consent, and the characteristics of the intranasal vaccine, while the second video addressed the relevance of childhood flu vaccination, answering frequently asked questions and reinforcing key public health messages.

It should be noted that the latter video was produced and starred by the same healthcare professionals, pediatricians and pediatric primary care nurses, who subsequently administered the vaccine in the educational centers, thus reinforcing families' trust.

This innovative strategy replaces the traditional talks that healthcare professionals gave in schools during the flu campaign for families and allowed for an increase in vaccination coverage of the child population, from 25.7 percent in the previous campaign to 37.4 percent in the 2025-26 campaign.

This initiative is part of the flu vaccination strategy launched by the Directorate General of Public Health of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS).

The Lanzarote Primary Care Directorate has congratulated the Technical Unit team for the work carried out and for "having promoted an innovative, accessible, and effective initiative that has brought vaccination closer to families and significantly improved childhood vaccination coverage on the island".

This recognition, they assure, “highlights the commitment, involvement, and coordinated work capacity of Primary Care professionals, especially pediatricians and pediatric nurses, whose work is fundamental to promoting prevention and health education from an early age”.

III AEV Awards

With the AEV Awards, the Spanish Association of Vaccinology seeks to recognize, promote, and give visibility to projects, initiatives, and associations that contribute to increasing vaccination coverage and, furthermore, reflect the value of innovation, coordination among professionals, and closeness to the population to improve vaccination coverage.

With the presentation of these awards, the Spanish Association of Vaccinology reaffirms its commitment to improving vaccination coverage, equity in access to immunization, and the dissemination of good practices that can be applied in different areas of the healthcare system.
