Dolphins, turtles, or whales may be some of the animals that appear stranded on the coast or are found at sea with injuries, disorientation, or entangled in plastics or other objects. Intervention by our account in these incidents is not always positive; it can generate consequences that threaten their lives.
Therefore, in these cases, it must be taken into account that the animal cannot be handled, as it could increase its stress or worsen its health condition. For an adequate rescue, one must observe the animal from a prudent distance and immediately call 112, the emergency number; 062, the Civil Guard's telephone number; or the Lanzarote Security and Emergencies Consortium, who will indicate the steps to follow.
First, people and pets must be kept away to avoid any shock or discomfort to the injured animal. In addition, protect it from excessive noise and, if the animal allows it, protect it from the sun, for example by applying a damp towel, taking care not to block the airways and eyes. Also, keep in mind not to apply fresh water.
Upon finding a cetacean, it should never be returned to the sea, as it can have negative consequences such as becoming stranded again. Marine turtles should also not be attempted to be put back into the sea, as they may have internal injuries and it could cause the animal's death within a few days. That is why, in any case, one must wait for the arrival of professionals.
In these situations, sometimes the best help is not to intervene in the rescue and to call the emergency numbers. Rapid communication and follow-up by professionals improve the chances of the animal's recovery.
