A 43-year-old British tourist who traveled with his family to Lanzarote for a holiday enjoying the island's sun ended up in a coma and undergoing emergency surgery after suffering a severe blow to the head that forced surgeons to remove half of his skull for him to survive, according to the newspaper Mirror.
The events occurred a few days ago after Paul Grant decided to treat his family to this week-long trip for his mother's birthday, on September 11.
His mother, his sister, and her husband traveled to Lanzarote and were able to enjoy the first day by the hotel pool. However, that same night, Paul's mother, who shared a room with him, heard her son having a seizure and that, because of it, he had fallen and hit his head hard.
"I woke up to my mother banging on the door at five in the morning because Paul had a seizure and had fallen and hit his head in the hotel room. He was covered in blood, he was in the hallway, we think he hit it against the wall," his sister recounted.
After calling an ambulance, he was rushed to the hospital where he was induced into a coma because his liver and kidneys were failing. The British man was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and was transferred to the Doctor Negrín University Hospital.
Later, a surgeon at this hospital informed the family that Paul needed emergency surgery to relieve the severe brain pressure he was suffering and thus save his life. That same day, he underwent surgery to remove the right side of his skull.
His sister revealed that Grant suffered his first seizure a couple of months ago after being mugged in Newcastle, where his wallet and mobile phone were stolen, admitting that "he hasn't been the same since" and that "that's why these family holidays were so important to him."
More than 1,700 euros spent on flights and hotels
During his hospital stay, Paul Grant's family has spent more than 1,500 pounds on flights and accommodation, that is, more than 1,700 euros. For this reason, the family has started a GoFundMe to raise funds and cover all expenses. So far, they have raised more than 4,000 pounds (4,655 euros).
The British man remains hospitalized and is not yet out of danger, as "he has a part of his brain severely damaged," so he remains in an induced coma.
His sister admits that she does not know if Paul has insurance nor how much the medical bills will cost when her brother gets better.
