The high temperatures that the summer season causes increase the probabilities of suffering heatstroke. Faced with this situation, the Canary Emergency Service (SUC), dependent on the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, has created a campaign to remind people of the importance of what to do in the face of the first symptoms to avoid further complications.
“When you need it, the SUC acts” is the campaign that aims to raise public awareness about prevention in the face of the first symptoms and subsequent action when suffering heatstroke.
In the face of the arrival of the first symptoms, the affected person should be moved to a shady, cool, and ventilated area. Subsequently, place damp cloths on the forehead and any area of the body that can be flexed, such as the wrists, groin…
If the person is conscious, water should be given in small quantities and gradually. In addition, place them in the anti-shock position, that is, lying on their back with their legs slightly elevated and their head tilted.
In case of more severe symptoms such as convulsions or dry and hot skin, the Canary Emergency Service should be contacted urgently, who will indicate the steps to follow until the arrival of professionals, it being an emergency that could cause death due to the failure of the mechanisms that regulate body temperature. Likewise, if there is loss of consciousness, water or food should never be introduced.
To prevent any symptoms of heatstroke, remember to stay hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially during the central hours of the day.
