The Minister of Environment of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Samuel Martín (Coalición Canaria), intervened this Tuesday morning on Radio Lanzarote-Onda Cero to explain what happened with one of the temporary parking lots planned for the celebration of the Primary Sector Fair, which will be held at the Teguise Agro-industrial Complex between June 4 and 7.
The Environment department of the Cabildo de Lanzarote has rejected the request from the Teguise City Council to enable a parking lot in front of the Industrial Complex, on the LZ-30, on the other side of the road, due to the possible environmental impact that cars and the transit of people could cause in the area.
This parking lot was planned to be located in a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA) of the Northern Islets of Lanzarote and Famara, a protected area within the Natura 2000 Network (ES0000040) since 1997, which was expanded in 2006 and updated in 2022.
"Last year, the Teguise City Council did not request authorization for that parking area, and it was not authorized by the Environment department," defended Samuel Martín.
According to the minister, after the rains this winter, this area has experienced a recovery. "Vegetation this year in Lanzarote has recovered different areas of the island, and as vegetation recovers, [...] fauna has also reached places where it did not reach before," indicated Martín.
To avoid damage to fauna and flora, as well as the risk of attendees having to cross the road to attend the Primary Sector Fair, the Environment department has decided to give the go-ahead to enable other spaces in the vicinity of the Agro-industrial Complex and outside the protected area.
