A dead dogfish appeared this Monday on Famara beach, according to the Security and Emergencies Consortium. After the alert, agents from the Environment Department moved to the location to take charge of it and remove it.
It is a cartilaginous fish whose body is elongated and dark brown or dark gray in color. It measures on average one meter or one and a half meters, although it can reach two meters in length.
It moves in shallow waters of approximately fifty meters deep, although it can reach 600 meters. It is a shark of an active temperament and does not usually attack unless it feels threatened.
It is a very popular shark in the Canary Islands, it is edible and highly appreciated in Andalusian and Canarian gastronomy. This has caused its population to have decreased considerably, becoming a vulnerable species in some areas.
