The Cabildo of Lanzarote continues to take the necessary steps to guarantee, together with the Government of the Canary Islands, the supply of drinking water to the island of La Graciosa, after formally requesting the concession of occupation of the maritime-terrestrial public domain for the installation of the new underwater pipeline that will replace the current one, which is severely deteriorated.
The Official Gazette of the Canary Islands (BOC) published this Friday the resolution of the Directorate General of Coasts and Management of the Canary Maritime Space, initiating the public information process, a mandatory step within the administrative procedure for the concession requested by the Cabildo of Lanzarote for a period of 50 years.
For the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, "we are facing great news because we are taking a qualitative leap from an administrative point of view to replace the current pipeline, a strategic infrastructure that has serious deficiencies due to years of lack of maintenance and whose situation was decisive in the most severe water crisis suffered by the citizens of La Graciosa in the summer of 2022."Betancort thanked "the great effort made by the Government of the Canary Islands to move this infrastructure forward" and recalled that "due to that situation of genuine water emergency on the eighth island, with continuous cuts in the supply of drinking water, we still have in our minds the moments when the people of La Graciosa had to go to the sea to brush their teeth or wash dishes. We can now say that we are closer to bringing La Graciosa into the 21st century."For his part, the Director General of Water for the Government of the Canary Islands, José García Leal, has stated that he takes on this project, which his predecessor, Mónica Gómez, had begun, with enthusiasm and reaffirms his commitment to making it a reality during this term.
The project is confined to the submarine section of the pipeline and the land sections located in the public maritime-terrestrial domain on both Lanzarote and La Graciosa, ensuring the continuity of service between the two islands.
The BOC announcement includes the start of the mandatory public information process for a period of 20 days, during which citizens and interested entities may submit allegations, observations, or inquiries regarding the project.
The Lanzarote Island Council's Water Counselor, Domingo Cejas, emphasizes that "we are facing a fundamental advance within the roadmap set after the declaration of the water emergency, allowing us to unblock a priority action to reinforce the security, stability, and reliability of the drinking water supply to La Graciosa."
Domingo Cejas recalls that the complete project documentation can be consulted both online on the website of the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Mobility of the Government of the Canary Islands and in person at its official offices, as expressly stated in the resolution published this Friday in the BOC.After the period for objections has concluded, the definitive granting of the 50-year concession for the occupation of public domain will proceed, an essential step to tender and execute the works for the new submarine pipeline that will guarantee the supply of drinking water to La Graciosa
