A citizen gathering has been called for this Thursday, September 3rd, in La Graciosa with the objective of controlling the feral cat colonies that live on the eighth island without control and pose a risk to local birds in this protected area. The mobilization will take place at 9:00 AM in front of the municipal office.
In parallel to this mobilization, a campaign has also been launched on Change.org which already has over 1,300 signatures to find a solution for the cats on the eighth island.
The Felina Maulli2 Association explains in this citizen initiative that although cats are members of the island, providing companionship and well-being, the lack of adequate population management turns them into "a threat to local birds and a nuisance to residents".
For this reason, they ask the Teguise City Council to implement a sustainable management plan for the island's feline colonies. From an "ethical and respectful" perspective, they propose that the cats be sterilized as a preventive measure or, as an alternative, be relocated to a shelter created in La Graciosa to receive care and simultaneously protect the island's endemic species.
"Supporting this cause not only means protecting our environment and our local species, but also ensuring that the traditional presence of cats continues to be a harmonious part of our community," they emphasize in the initiative.
