Canalink, a public company dependent on the Cabildo de Tenerife through the Institute of Technology and Renewable Energies (ITER), has completed the deep-sea deployment of the Atlántica project after completing the last planned shore-end in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote. With this action, the cable ship Teliri has finished all the laying work it is carrying out within the framework of this project.
In total, 553 kilometers of submarine cable have been deployed, a distance equivalent to about 1,300 football fields, with the aim of reinforcing connectivity between Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote and increasing the capacity and resilience of communications between the islands.
The project includes an eastern route connecting Ojos de Garza, in Gran Canaria, with Puerto del Rosario, in Fuerteventura, and Playa Honda, in Lanzarote, and a western route linking Barranco de Tenoya, in Gran Canaria, with Corralejo, in Fuerteventura, and Playa Blanca, in Lanzarote.
The island councilor for Innovation, Research and Development, Juanjo Martínez, highlighted that "from the Cabildo de Tenerife, we are committed to strategic infrastructures that improve the connectivity of the islands, reinforce our technological capacity, and generate new opportunities for citizens, companies, and administrations."
For his part, the CEO of Canalink, Rubén Molowny, emphasized that "completing the marine deployment of Atlántica represents reaching a very important milestone within a project of great complexity and crucial for the future of the Canary Islands. All the work corresponding to the cable ship Teliri has now been completed, and we are now facing a new phase to complete the necessary terrestrial infrastructure."
Molowny pointed out that "when we talk about 553 kilometers of cable deployed under the sea, we are talking about an infrastructure that we do not see, but which will be fundamental to continue responding to a growing demand for connectivity in the Canary Islands."
The project now moves towards the completion of terrestrial infrastructures. After finishing the marine laying work, the project will continue with actions to complete the connection of the submarine infrastructure with the terrestrial network. These include the pending shore-end works in Ojos de Garza, Tinoca, and Corralejo, as well as two boreholes, one in Gran Canaria and another in Fuerteventura.
It will also be necessary to execute the buried pipelines and carry out the adaptation of the telecommunications stations or CLS (Cable Landing Stations) at the seven mooring points of the project. These actions will allow the submarine cable to be connected to the terrestrial infrastructures and the network to be completed before it is put into service.
A strategic infrastructure with support from the European Union
The Atlántica de Canalink project has a total budget of 34 million euros, of which 23 million are financed by the European Union through funds from the CEF Digital program, an initiative that promotes strategic digital infrastructures for a more connected Europe.
The new infrastructure will contribute to strengthening communications between the eastern islands, providing a network with greater capacity and alternative routes to improve its resilience against possible incidents.
In this way, Atlántica responds to the growing digital needs of the archipelago and prepares the communications of the Canary Islands to face the demand of the coming years.
The deployed system joins the previously deployed Costa Calma branch, thus allowing the connection of an additional point with Fuerteventura. The branch has been financed by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Public Function through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.
