The Association for the Defense against Animal Cruelty Lanzarote (ADEMAL) has reported on its Instagram profile a presumed case of animal cruelty due to the poor conditions in which various animals are kept on a farm located in Tegoyo, in the municipality of Tías

In a video published by the Association on social media after a tip from a person walking in the area, three chained dogs can be seen, one of them small, apparently in poor condition and without a suitable place to shelter from the cold or sun.

The Animal Welfare Law in Spain (Law 7/2023) prohibits permanently tethering companion animals, especially dogs, whether on private property or in public, without direct supervision, even if they are well-fed or have shelter, as it is considered a form of mistreatment.

Furthermore, according to ADEMAL, "the sheep have **no type of sanitary control**, the chickens are in **totally dirty and abandoned terrain, and the rabbits are in a pigsty**". They also point out that they are **without water or food**Likewise, dirt can also be seen in the water and food containers, with traces of soil. On the other hand, inside the farm, **waste and belongings** can be observed

From the Association, they ask themselves, "how can something like this still happen in 2025? Animal abuse is a crime. Animals feel pain, hunger, thirst, and fear, and yet they are treated as if they were worthless".

ADEMAL has reported this alleged case of animal abuse to the police, who have already visited the site to inspect it. "We demand that the councilor responsible for Animal Welfare of the Tías City Council, Nicolás Saavedra, act firmly," they state.

Fines for animal abuse

The Animal Welfare Law in Spain (Law 7/2023) establishes a series of sanctions depending on the severity of the infraction. Minor infractions can result in fines of up to 10,000 euros. Meanwhile, serious infractions, such as deliberate abandonment of an animal or severe mistreatment, can incur fines ranging from 10,000 to 50,000 euros and prison sentences of three months to one year.

In extreme cases such as the death of the animal, the penalty can reach 200,000 euros and a prison sentence of up to two years, in addition to disqualification from owning animals.
