Last Friday, an intern recorded a pod of spotted dolphins (Stenella attenuata) swimming in the bay of Arrecife. The author of the video is Laura Sala, an intern in the degree in Education and Environmental Control in the office of the Reserve. This species of marine mammal is named for its characteristic white spots that run throughout its body.
In addition, it is a small dolphin species, ranging from 70 centimeters in pups to two meters in adults. However, the spots tend to appear with age.
Specifically, the images were taken from the Casa de los Arroyos, in the capital of Lanzarote. In them you can see how several specimens approached the shore of the Puente de las Bolas.
"We had a pleasant surprise," they declared from the Biosphere Reserve office. It is not common for these animals to get so close to the shore, but on this occasion they have done so to eat. The spotted dolphin feeds on small fish and squid. While its predators are tiger sharks, bull sharks and orcas.
This species is native to the tropical waters of the Atlantic Ocean. The Tonina Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to the research and dissemination of the marine environment, says that the sighting of these animals is more frequent in winter and spring.
