National Police agents have arrested in the municipality of Arrecife two young people, 20 and 16 years old, as alleged perpetrators of a series of fires that affected the capital of Lanzarote during the months of February, March and April 2025. These events caused considerable social alarm due to the recurrence of outbreaks in different streets of the municipality, mainly in central areas, where both urban furniture and parked vehicles were affected.

Once the situation was under control, the investigations were taken over by the Judicial Police Group in coordination with the Scientific Police. From the beginning, the indications pointed to intentional fires, ruling out motivations linked to threats or other serious crimes.

Thanks to the collaboration of the Local Police of Arrecife, through the video-surveillance cameras of businesses and traffic, as well as citizen collaboration, the two involved were identified, who acted on specific routes and were seen traveling on an electric scooter, which facilitated their escape from the scene.

The arrests were carried out on May 2 after a laborious reconstruction of the itinerary and physical characteristics of the suspects. Both have no police record.

After his arrest, the older one was brought to justice, being released with charges. The minor, on the other hand, was handed over to the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office of Las Palmas.

The motivations behind these acts have not yet been clarified, although it is presumed that they could be related to the search for notoriety, since the authors avoided staying in the affected areas after causing the fires.
