The Civil Guard has seized in the south of Gran Canaria a drug-trafficking boat carrying a stash of cocaine weighing more than three tons.
In total, 139 bales have been seized, weighing 3,360 kilos. The operation resulted in the arrest of the five crew members traveling on board with two long weapons for their protection. With several high-powered engines, the semi-rigid vessel was sailing about 70 miles south of the Canary island.
An assault rifle and a machine gun
Upon identifying it as a vessel related to drug trafficking, Civil Guards from the Maritime Service proceeded to stop the vessel, which quickly fled. The rapid reaction of the agents allowed them to begin tracking the vessel, which, after making successive evasive maneuvers, failed in its attempt to escape.
The five arrested crew members were traveling with an assault rifle and a light machine gun to avoid assaults from other organized groups. Possession of these long weapons is totally prohibited for private individuals.
The detainees, aged between 21 and 41, have been brought before the judicial authorities. The five face crimes against public health for drug trafficking, for serious disobedience, illegal possession of weapons, and membership in a criminal organization.
