The video surveillance cameras installed in the streets of Arrecife have captured a person dumping three loads of waste on a street in Argana Alta. The events took place during the early morning of last Friday on Cribo street, in Arrecife.
The recorded images show how, at different times of the early morning, a person deposited belongings and other bulky waste, generating a significant accumulation of materials next to the public road. The perpetrator, as explained by the Councilor for Cleaning, Jacobo Lemes, has already been identified and proposed for a fine.
For the councilor, this action demonstrates the usefulness of municipal video surveillance in prosecuting these types of practices. The cameras installed at various points in Arrecife have repeatedly allowed the identification of people who abandon waste in public areas and the processing of corresponding files, in addition to the complaints and reports made by residents themselves.
Lemes insists that "the cameras are proving to be a fundamental tool to end the feeling of impunity that those who abandon waste in our streets have had for a long time."
"What we have seen in Argana Alta is especially striking: three dumps made by the same person during a single early morning. We are not talking about a mistake or leaving an object on a single occasion, but about a repeated behavior that creates a problem for all residents," Lemes points out.
Up to 30,050 euros for serious infractions
The Councilor for Cleaning reminds that the abandonment or uncontrolled dumping of waste is not permitted behavior and can lead to the opening of a sanctioning file.
The Ordinance on Cleaning and Sustainability of Arrecife, published in the Official Gazette of the Province of Las Palmas in March 2026, considers the uncontrolled abandonment, dumping, or disposal of non-hazardous waste as a serious infraction when no serious damage has been caused to natural resources nor are they likely to cause serious damage to human health.
For serious infractions, the regulations establish fines of between 3,005.06 and 30,050.60 euros, in addition to considering other possible measures, such as the temporary cessation of activities or the temporary closure of facilities when applicable.
The regulation itself also establishes criteria for graduating sanctions, taking into account the circumstances of each case. Therefore, the existence of three discharges during the same early morning will be evaluated within the corresponding file, without it being appropriate to anticipate what the final sanction may be.
Lemes recalls that the City Council has free services for the removal of belongings from homes, precisely to prevent furniture, appliances, and other bulky items from ending up abandoned in the street. This service can be requested by calling the municipal telephone number 928 815 560 or via Whatsapp at 629 793 705.
“There is no need to throw this waste in the street. The Department of Cleaning has a service to collect it and the appropriate points to deposit each type of waste. Whoever decides to break the rules must know that the cameras are there and that, when the responsible party can be identified, the corresponding complaint will be processed,” concludes the councilor.
