A rigid-hulled inflatable boat of about ten meters in length ran aground on Saturday afternoon, July 25, in the El Lajero area, on the cliffs of Mala, in an incident that, as confirmed to La Voz de Lanzarote by sources from the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium, is related to drug trafficking and not to a case of irregular immigration.
The same sources have specified that the occupants of the boat are three Spanish citizens and one French citizen, who were reportedly arrested by the Civil Guard after the incident.
According to eyewitnesses who spoke to La Voz de Lanzarote, the inflatable boat was sighted around 7:00 PM entering the area of La Garita beach, in Arrieta. However, instead of heading towards the beach, it continued sailing towards the rocky coast of El Lajero, where it finally ran aground.
Witnesses also claimed to have seen how, shortly before the boat ran aground, several packages were thrown into the sea. Although everything indicated that they could contain narcotic substances, this must be confirmed by the investigation that the Civil Guard has open.
After the grounding, agents from the Local Police, Civil Guard personnel, and members of the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium moved to the scene and participated in the operation carried out in the area.
Authorities are keeping the investigation open to clarify all the details of the operation and determine the extent of the alleged shipment, while police proceedings continue.
