National Police agents have arrested a patient admitted to the Insular Hospital of Gran Canaria as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of assault against a public official, after allegedly engaging in various episodes of threats, insults, and intimidation directed at healthcare personnel at the hospital center.

The investigation began following several complaints filed by healthcare professionals from the ward where the now-detained individual had been admitted since November, who reported having suffered repeated episodes of verbal violence and intimidating behavior from the now-detained individual during his stay at the center.

Coexistence problems and non-compliance with hospital rules

According to the complainants, the patient had frequent coexistence problems and displayed an attitude contrary to the hospital's internal rules, creating tense situations with both healthcare staff and other patients.

On several occasions, the intervention of the hospital's private security personnel was necessary to contain incidents and restore normalcy.

Among the reported episodes, one stands out in which the arrested individual began to severely berate both healthcare professionals and another patient with reduced mobility who shared a room with him.

Following the first complaint, National Police agents went to the Insular Hospital to interview the individual involved, identify him, and attempt to mediate the situation, urging him to cease his behavior and maintain appropriate coexistence with the center's workers and patients.

However, the investigated individual ignored the police warnings, persisting in his intimidating and threatening attitude, which is why, once he was discharged from the hospital, he was arrested.

The National Police highlights the close collaboration and coordination between healthcare professionals, the private security personnel of the Insular Hospital, and the police officers assigned to the South District police station, a cooperation that is fundamental to ensuring safety in healthcare centers and providing an immediate response to any violent episode.

Likewise, it is recalled that any physical assault, threat, or intimidation directed at healthcare professionals may entail criminal liability and will be prosecuted in accordance with current legislation.
