The first quarter of 2018 closed in Lanzarote with 97 traffic accidents, 19 more than in the same period last year, according to figures from the Island Council's Road Safety and Education Service made public by the Data Center. However, despite the increase in accidents on the island's roads, the number of both fatalities and serious injuries decreased.
Specifically, from January to March 2017 there were five deaths in traffic accidents in Lanzarote, while in the first quarter of this year there were four. According to data published by the Island Council, two people died in accidents that occurred in January and two more in February, while in March there were no fatalities on the island's roads.
As for serious injuries, the figures are identical. The 97 traffic accidents recorded in the first quarter of 2018 left five seriously injured compared to the four in the 78 accidents that occurred on Lanzarote's roads from January to March last year.
On the other hand, in the first three months of 2018, 48 minor injuries were recorded in traffic accidents, one more than in the first quarter of 2017. The number of vehicles involved also increased, specifically by 36, from 136 to 172.
