The strong wind that Lanzarote suffered this past Wednesday caused the Montaña Mina wind turbine, which had been out of control for weeks, to break.
As will be recalled, this Tuesday the Local Police cordoned off the area to preserve the safety of pedestrians. "The day before yesterday I received videos from the neighbors in which you could see how the place was," explains the Councilor for Public Works, Raúl de León. "It was not in the conditions it should have been," therefore, "we spoke with the Local Police and the Emergency Consortium so that they would go to the place," he confirms. And although "it was not going to generate danger to the citizens", after seeing the videos, we told them to "proceed to cordon it off."
At this moment, "now the mill is stopped" and we are waiting for "the Government of the Canary Islands to proceed to start its dismantling", confirms Raúl de León. The councilor recalls that from the San Bartolomé City Council "we have been trying to dismantle that wind farm for years." And we believe that "there are 800 thousand euros allocated to that project."
The ideal would be to place "some larger wind turbines", although due to the "situation of proximity to the airport, it is not possible", says the councilor. That is the main reason why "the park must be dismantled".
