On Monday night, officials from the Tahíche prison saved the life of a prisoner who set fire to his cell, according to the ACAIP Trade Union Association.
The events took place around 10:30 p.m., when inmate F.J.F.D. burned a mattress in the isolation module where he was located, thus causing the evacuation of the entire module during the night shift.
After causing the fire, the inmate notified the officials, who arrived immediately with extinguishers and self-contained breathing apparatus. Shortly after, they managed to extinguish the fire and attend to the prisoner who showed signs of drowning from smoke inhalation.
As a result of the incident, both an official and the prisoner were transferred to the José Molina Orosa Hospital, where the inmate still remains admitted. In addition, due to the suffocating smoke in the environment, they proceeded to evacuate the inmates to safeguard their physical integrity, with the consequent failure in the security of the center.
According to the ACAIP Trade Union Association, the prisoner had been transferred to the area on Sunday afternoon after causing a serious regimental incident.
