The Civil Guard of the Arrecife Traffic detachment in Lanzarote, has investigated a driver, as presumed author of a crime against road safety, when during road safety surveillance tasks they established a speed control at kilometer 1.700 of the road from Femés to Playa Blanca in the municipality of Yaiza, where the speed is limited to 60 km/h and they detected a car traveling at 148 kilometers per hour.
Agents of the Traffic Group of the Arrecife detachment belonging to the Las Palmas Subsector established last August of the current year, a speed control on the road from Femés to Playa Blanca in the municipality of Yaiza, where the maximum speed allowed for said road is 60 km/h, as a result of this operation, a car was detected traveling at 148 km/h.
As a consequence of the speeding, the driver was informed that he will be investigated as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against road safety for exceeding the speed limit by more than 80 km/h on an interurban road.
The proceedings were handed over to the Court of Instruction number 3 of Arrecife in Lanzarote.
Applicable regulations
In accordance with article 379 of the Penal Code, driving at a speed exceeding the maximum speed by 80 km/h on interurban roads is punishable by a prison sentence of 3 to 6 months, a fine of 6 to 12 months, or community service from 31 to 90 days, in addition to the deprivation of the right to drive motor vehicles and mopeds for 1 to 4 years.
It should be taken into account that speed has a direct influence on the occurrence and severity of road accidents. With higher driving speeds, the number of accidents and their severity increase exponentially. Always and under any circumstances, speed must be adapted to the conditions of the road, traffic, weather, and visibility.
