The National Police in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria have arrested a 44-year-old man, of Romanian nationality, against whom an International Arrest Warrant (OID) was issued by the authorities of the United Kingdom, for several crimes of sexual assault, allegedly committed against a minor family member, punishable by maximum sentences of 14 years in prison.

The investigation began on December 25, 2024, after receiving communication from the Fugitives Group of the General Police Station of the Judicial Police, of the (OID) issued by the British authorities.

According to the arrest warrant, the fugitive was arrested on October 5, 2020, following the complaint filed by the father of the minor, who was 13 years old at the time, with the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI), in which the authorities were informed of the contacts of a sexual nature, that the detainee would have had with the minor.

The fugitive, who denied the facts, was released on bail, and did not attend the trial to which he was summoned and which should have been held on September 23, 2021, so the authorities issued an arrest warrant against him.

The police operation carried out by the Drug and Organized Crime Unit (UDYCO) of Las Palmas, after an arduous investigation that had the close collaboration of the Provincial Brigade of Immigration and Borders, ended successfully, managing to locate, identify and arrest the wanted man last April 25 in the municipality of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Once the police proceedings were completed, the detainee was placed at the disposal of the competent Judicial Authority, who carried out the necessary procedures to transfer the fugitive to the requesting authorities.
