The surfer from Lanzarote Jorge Acosta, 53 years old, died drowned this past Monday while surfing in the Gaafu Dhaalu atoll, in the south of the Maldives islands.

According to information provided by the Efe Agency, the Canary Islander was on board a tourist safari boat and had traveled to practice surfing in an area near the island of Vaadhoo, a popular destination in the archipelago for fans of this sport.

This is the third incident involving foreign tourists in the country in just over a month, according to local police reports.

Likewise, this Monday, Maldivian authorities confirmed the discovery of the bodies of five Italian citizens who died last Thursday in a diving accident in the Vaavu atoll, near the capital.

Rescue teams, who have called upon Italian and Finnish specialists following the death on Saturday of a Maldivian military diver working on the search efforts, plan to recover the bodies in the coming days.

Furthermore, on April 11, another Spanish tourist, a 30-year-old gynecologist celebrating his honeymoon, suffered the amputation of a leg after a severe tiger shark attack while diving.

The attack took place in the Gaafu Alif atoll, an area near the location where the drowning of the Spanish national was registered this Monday.
