Lanzarote, in mourning for the tragedy of flight 5022

Lanzarote is in mourning for the air tragedy of flight 5022 that covered the route between Madrid and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and that has claimed the lives of 153 people. The Cabildo declared three days of official mourning this Wednesday, and the town councils have already begun to react by suspending the celebrations planned within their patron saint festivities.

From the Arrecife City Council they announced the cancellation of the events planned for this Wednesday, although the handball tournament was finally held, but this Thursday they have decided to extend the suspension of the celebrations until next Saturday at twelve o'clock at night, so the events will not return until Sunday morning.

San Bartolomé, which suspended the festive events organized on the occasion of the patron saint festivities from Wednesday afternoon, also joins the official mourning, for three days, for the fatal victims of the accident that occurred at the Barajas airport.

"The mayor of San Bartolomé conveys his deepest condolences, in his name and on behalf of the entire Municipal Corporation, to all the relatives of the victims, family and friends, showing his pain, consternation and solidarity," they say in a press release.

For its part, the Department of Festivities of the Teguise City Council and the Festivities Commission of the Sacred Heart of Mary of Caleta de Famara have decided this Thursday to postpone until Sunday the beginning of the recreational activities planned for the next few hours.

From both entities they wanted to "transmit to the relatives of the victims of the air accident that occurred in Barajas the most sincere feeling of solidarity and regret that encourages them in these hard times they are living".

In addition, both the Cabildo and the different town councils of the island have called this Thursday, at 12 noon, for five minutes of silence in the doors of each institution, where the flags fly at half-staff.
