The bus drivers of Lanzarote continue to face situations that endanger their physical integrity during their working hours. In this past week, these professionals suffered two altercations, one of them with a bladed weapon in Puerto del Carmen.
According to Ricardo Hernández, CCOO delegate at IntercityBus, this bladed weapon assault occurred in the early hours of Saturday to Sunday around 03:00 AM, when three young people were in the back of the bus smoking, making noise, and bothering the other passengers.
Following complaints from users, the driver called their attention to behave. However, at that moment, one of the underage boys pulled a knife on the driver and "threatened him". Fortunately, the intervention of the passengers helped to gain time until the police arrived, who arrested those involved.
Another of the assaults occurred days earlier when a bus driver suffered an attempted assault by another of the passengers. On this occasion, the person was apparently under the influence of alcohol and began to drink and eat inside the bus, something totally forbidden. After the bus driver reprimanded him for this action, the passenger tried to assault him.
In this regard, Ricardo Hernández has highlighted that they are demanding from public administrations and the company itself a greater police presence in the different stations and interchanges of Lanzarote to try to deter this type of behavior.
