The Civil Guard of Fuerteventura, initiated proceedings for administrative infractions in the matter of maritime fishing after seizing a specimen of bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) weighing 126.15 kilograms, caught
without the corresponding authorization.
The events occurred on April 18 during a preventive service on the east coast of the island, when agents detected an all-terrain vehicle circulating on a track near the coast. After proceeding to identify it, they verified that inside it was carrying several large fragments that, presumably, corresponded to a specimen of bluefin tuna recently butchered, in addition to cutting tools and various material linked to fishing activity.
In the course of the proceedings, the occupants acknowledged having captured the specimen hours before. However, they could not provide the mandatory authorization for recreational fishing of this species, which is subject to a strict control regime that regulates quotas, capture periods, and traceability measures.
Likewise, from the investigations carried out, indications emerged of a possible commercial destination of the catch, a particularly relevant aspect as it is an activity incompatible with recreational fishing and which will be assessed by the competent authority within the corresponding sanctioning procedure.
The specimen seized was transferred for its weighing and official species verification, confirming that it was a bluefin tuna weighing a total of 126.15 kilograms. Subsequently, it was deposited in facilities enabled by the competent services, where it remains in custody awaiting its corresponding administrative management.
The Civil Guard reminds that the capture of bluefin tuna is especially regulated to guarantee the sustainability of the species and the protection of marine resources, so any activity outside the current regulations may lead to significant administrative sanctions, as well as the seizure of catches and equipment used.
