The La Santa shelter, which houses unaccompanied foreign minors, had to be evacuated due to a fire on Monday night. According to La Voz, the fire originated in one of the bedrooms, where 12 people were sleeping, and affected the mattresses. As a precaution, it was decided to evacuate the center while firefighters extinguished the fire.
The firefighters extinguished the fire with water, ventilated the facilities and gave information to the center staff on measures to take into account. The minors have been relocated to the same center "All the children are in good condition," said the manager of the Consortium, Enrique Espinosa.
The causes of the fire are still unknown and will begin to be investigated on the morning of Tuesday, January 7.
In addition to the firefighters, the Local Police, the Red Cross, Emerlan and the president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, accompanied by the councilors of Social Welfare, Marcos Bergaz and Emergencies, Francisco Javier Aparicio, have moved to the area.
Firefighters and center staff have shown the president and councilors the state of the affected room, as well as informed of the measures to relocate the minors housed in that bedroom. From the Cabildo they affirm that the works to repair the damages caused by the fire will begin as soon as possible.
In statements after the visit, María Dolores Corujo wanted to thank the speed of the response of the emergency services, as well as the management team of the La Santa shelter and the minors themselves "who have done everything possible to make the intervention a success."
