The Department of Transport of the Cabildo of Lanzarote and La Graciosa has processed two sanctioning files against two travelers for breaching the Regulations for Users of the Regular Interurban Passenger Transport of the island.
The behaviors, classified as very serious, were registered on line 3 which connects the towns of Costa Teguise and Puerto del Carmen and constituted a violation of the rules governing the use of this public service, with an economic penalty amounting to 4,000 euros in each case, in addition to the temporary withdrawal of the personal travel pass.
The Minister of Transport, Miguel Ángel Jiménez, has stressed that “public transport is an essential service that must be provided in conditions of safety, tranquility, and respect for all people. We cannot allow uncivilized behaviors to alter the operation of the buses or generate situations of insecurity for travelers and the professionals who work every day to guarantee this service”.
Jiménez has pointed out that “using public transport implies accepting basic rules of coexistence. The vast majority of citizens make responsible use of the buses, and our obligation is to protect that civic behavior and act against those behaviors that violate the rules and harm all users”.
A regulation to guarantee safety and coexistence
The Cabildo reminds that Lanzarote has a Regulation for Users of the Regular Interurban Passenger Transport that establishes the rights and obligations of those who use this public service, with the aim of guaranteeing adequate, safe, accessible, and respectful provision.
Among the obligations included in the regulations are maintaining correct, respectful, and egalitarian behavior at all times; making appropriate use of the vehicles, avoiding their deterioration or dirt; respecting reserved seats for people with disabilities or reduced mobility, and heeding the instructions of the service personnel.
Likewise, travelers must accept the driver's criteria when discrepancies arise related to the operation of the transport, in accordance with the provisions of the regulations, and avoid any action that may disrupt the service, compromise safety, or harm other users.
The regulations also expressly prohibit smoking or vaping inside the buses; eating or drinking, except water; talking to the driver while the vehicle is in motion; accessing the service with skates or skateboards, as well as doing so in swimwear. These provisions seek to preserve the conditions of safety, hygiene, and comfort during journeys, as well as to guarantee that all people can use public transport in an adequate and respectful environment.
The counselor has insisted that "the rules are not a mere administrative procedure, but a tool to protect those who use the buses and the workers who make this service possible. From the Cabildo, we will continue to ensure compliance with the regulations and apply the foreseen measures for conduct that violates them. We want public transport to be safe, accessible, and of quality, and that requires both the responsibility of the Administration and the collaboration of all users," concluded Miguel Ángel Jiménez.
