The Road Accident Investigation Team of the Arrecife Civil Guard Traffic Detachment has investigated the driver of a truck as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against road safety, after being caught driving under the influence of drugs and having been involved in two road accidents from which he subsequently fled.
The events occurred around 8:45 PM on November 28, 2025, at kilometer marker 4.500 of the LZ 2 road, on the service road towards Lanzarote Airport. At that location, the driver lost control of the truck, leaving the road on the right side and impacting the perimeter wall of the airport facilities.
After the accident, the driver fled the scene on foot, entering the airport's secure perimeter without authorization. Thanks to the swift intervention of runway personnel and the collaboration of agents from the Civil Guard's Fiscal and Border Unit at the Airport, as well as the Tías Main Post, it was possible to intercept and apprehend the individual.
During subsequent checks, officers confirmed that the driver had been involved in another prior traffic accident, from which he had also fled. In his escape, he engaged in reckless and erratic driving, traveling in a zigzag pattern and at high speed for several kilometers, despite the vehicle carrying construction materials.
Positive for cocaine
The individual underwent alcohol and drug detection tests, yielding a positive result for cocaine, a finding that was subsequently confirmed by the competent laboratory.
For all these reasons, the Road Accident Investigation Team of the Civil Guard of Arrecife proceeded to investigate him as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against road safety, specifically for driving a motor vehicle under the influence of narcotic substances and causing two consecutive road accidents.
In addition, two administrative complaints were filed against him under the General Traffic Regulations, for reckless driving and for not adequately signaling an obstacle or danger on the road. Both infractions carry financial penalties totaling 580 euros, as well as the loss of 6 points on his driver's license.
The proceedings initiated by Arrecife's EIS Team, under number 547/2025, were sent to the Arrecife Court of Instruction number 4. After the trial, the driver was sentenced to eight months and one day of disqualification from driving motor vehicles and 32 days of community service.
