The Arrecife City Council reported this Wednesday morning that it is investigating the demolition of part of the wall of Plaza de Las Palmas, next to the church of San Ginés, a work that had been inaugurated last autumn. The mayor, Yonathan de León, reported this Wednesday morning that he has ordered the Local Police of Arrecife to open an investigation and clarify the circumstances
This square, unveiled last fall, after a comprehensive renovation, has suffered significant damage in its corner with Calle Otilia Díaz. Everything indicates that this demolition was caused by "the maneuver of the driver of a van when he was driving and maneuvering in the area."
The mayor, who is directly responsible for the Local Police, has requested that the corresponding report be drawn up to clarify these severe damages to this area of the Plaza de la Iglesia, and to determine the causes, in order to - if the police investigation so determines - claim from the driver's insurance company to cover the expenses.
Last fall, after many years stagnant, the Plaza de Las Palmas was restored, with heritage protection as a BIC, being one of the first artistic works with the intervention of the Arrecife artist, César Manrique, and being in the protection zone of the church of San Ginés Obispo, cataloged as a monument.
Yonathan de León wishes to know the conclusions of the report requested from the Local Police of Arrecife to determine the actions that the Arrecife City Council, the owner institution of this symbolic and historic square in the capital of Lanzarote, could undertake.
