The rapid intervention of the Arrecife Local Police has allowed to identify and locate the vehicle which, during the early hours of this Thursday, was involved in a spectacular accident in the Argana Alta neighborhood. The driver, after hitting a tree and knocking down a lamppost, fled the scene attempting to hide the car among some nearby warehouses.

The events occurred after 3:00 AM on Tenderete street. After receiving the alert from CECOES, the officers moved to the scene, where they found a scene of significant material damage. According to the police report, the vehicle was traveling uphill when, for reasons still under investigation, it invaded the opposite lane and went onto the sidewalk. After driving several meters on it, it violently impacted against a tree and a 7.5-meter high lamppost, which was completely knocked down.

Failed escape and traces of liquid

Far from stopping, the person responsible continued driving to try to hide the car in some land located behind the warehouses in the area. However, the trail of liquids —possibly from the damaged radiator— and the coincidence of the damage to the bodywork with the struck urban furniture facilitated its location by the agents.

Due to the condition of the lamppost and the electrical risk, the intervention of the firefighters from the Security and Emergency Consortium was necessary, who secured the area and cleared the road. The police operation was concluded at 06:09 hours.

The City Council will demand payment for the damages

Following the municipal protocol, Arrecife has already initiated the procedures to claim the cost of the damages to the urban furniture. The council has warned that, in case the vehicle's insurance does not cover the amount, action will be taken against the personal assets of the owner subsidiarily.
