A 39-year-old man has been arrested by the Local Police this Tuesday in Arrecife after allegedly causing a fire in the family home in which his mother was inside, who had to be rescued by firefighters, as reported by the Emergency and Security Consortium of the Cabildo de Lanzarote. In addition, according to sources from the Local Police, the man has been placed at the disposal of the courts.
The detainee had been demanding money from his mother for several days to buy drugs, according to sources speaking to Efe. Furthermore, according to La Voz, the man is said to be suffering a crisis derived from his relationship with drugs. It was the detainee's sister who alerted Emergencies because she was allegedly receiving threats from her brother, but when officers arrived at the house they discovered the fire.
The incident occurred in the area known as Cien Viviendas, after the arrested man allegedly set fire to his room, where, according to La Voz, five weapons were found: a machete, three knives and a razor.
Agents of the National and Local Police, a basic life support ambulance, as well as the island's firefighters, who were alerted to the fire that started on the second floor of a house, went to the scene of the fire.
Upon arrival, the firefighters were informed that there was a person inside and two butane gas cylinders. After rescuing the woman, who did not require medical assistance, and extinguishing the fire, the firefighters re-entered the house with family members and accompanied by agents of the Local and National Police.
