The Arrecife City Council proceeded from the first hours of the morning this Sunday to wall up two properties in the area, which were vacated due to a fire that occurred on the same day in one of the houses around 1:42 p.m. An action with which the Local Police of Arrecife avoided a "new occupation" of the houses on Cienfuegos street, in the capital.
The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, sent workers from the Department of Public Works of the City Council, under his direction, so that the owners could wall up the accesses to these houses, which were frequented by several squatters. The walling has been possible after these properties were vacated and their "residents" left due to the fire that occurred this Sunday.
To prevent the squatters from accessing the houses again, the Arrecife Local Police cordoned off the area, according to the city council. Throughout the night and early morning, the police officers were watching the surroundings to stop the "possible and foreseeable" occupation, the City Council detailed.
The mayor of the city recalls that the "current national laws hinder the eviction of homes with people inside, if there is no court order. "The Government of Pedro Sánchez modified the laws and protects the squatters, to the point of forcing the city councils to register them in these houses even if they do not provide rental contracts or property deeds by people who perpetrate their occupation," De León concluded.
