The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León (Popular Party), has announced this Wednesday that the legal counsel of the City Council has reported to the Prosecutor's Office the alleged irregularities found in several cancellations of fines of traffic imposed in the city. The City Council has assured that the Public Ministry has initiated an investigation.

The council has reported in a statement that the municipal leader ordered last autumn an internal investigation to clarify if there were cancellations of traffic fines in the City Council's computer systems that had been carried out without the corresponding discharge files.

The Legal Advisory of the City Council, attached to the Mayor's Office, sent the content of the aforementioned municipal report to the Prosecutor's Office. Now, the Prosecutor's Office has initiated a judicial investigation procedure to clarify past actions.

After the aforementioned investigation, the mayor requested an internal report to know the identities of the people who annulled the sanctions without following the established procedures. The Arrecife City Council has not specified which people are involved, but it has assured that these fines were lifted in past mandates.

For this investigation, de León required the company responsible for the City Council's computer system to carry out a detailed audit. Said audit certified that traffic fines have been annulled without being governed by what is established in the regulations.
