Around 49 people traveling as stowaways on a ship have been rescued by the Civil Guard this Friday morning in waters near Lanzarote.

According to the manager of the Island Security and Emergency Consortium, Enrique Espinosa, the vessel, a tugboat, departed from the Senegalese capital of Dakar.

Apparently, the crew realized halfway through the voyage that there were almost fifty people traveling clandestinely on the ship and alerted the authorities. A Civil Guard patrol boat has traveled to the vessel to tow the ship with the stowaways.

At the same time, the vessel waited twelve nautical miles from Lanzarote to receive permission to access the port of Arrecife, where it could arrive at 9:00 a.m. this Friday, if finally granted.
