The parish of Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria celebrates this year the 230th anniversary of its founding with various events that began in early June and will conclude on July 18. For this Thursday, July 2, the opening of a sacred art exhibition has been planned, and on Friday, a round table discussion will take place with an overview of its creation and history.
This afternoon, at 8:00 PM, the sacred art exhibition will be inaugurated with collected material belonging to Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria: a Roman missal, a large antique key, sacred vessels, monstrances, chasubles, dalmatics, and albs, among other ornaments and symbols. The exhibition will remain open in the hall of the Hermitage of San Antonio until July 17, from Monday to Friday between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM.
This Friday, July 3, at 7:30 PM in the Candelaria church, a round table discussion on the 230 years of the parish will be held, moderated by the chronicler of Tías, Juan Cruz, and featuring José de León, Julián Rodríguez, and Nino Díaz, offering three different perspectives on the origins of the parish and the municipality.
José de Léon Hernández, known as Pepe el Uruguayo, is an archaeologist and Doctor of History, born in Uruguay to Canary Islands emigrants. He is the author of the books La cultura del volcán and Lanzarote bajo el volcán, among other research works on survival after the volcanic eruptions of the 18th century.
Julián Rodríguez is a disseminator of the popular culture of Tías, with extensive knowledge of the historical, archaeological, and ethnographic heritage of the area. He was the creator of the Catalogue of Historical Artistic Heritage of the municipality during his technical management at the City Council and is the author of the book Técnicas en la confección de las artesanías de fibras vegetales y animales.
Nino Díaz stands out as a great cultural manager through the foundation that bears his name, organizing concerts and notable events. He is a musician, composer, clarinetist, and orchestra conductor. In fact, he has composed hundreds of works, and his creations are heard in the best auditoriums in Europe.
The program will continue on Thursday, July 9, at 8:00 PM, with the inauguration of a projection of old images in the Ermita de San Antonio Art Room by Mari Concha Bernal. For July 14, a talk has been scheduled at the Candelaria church by the former parish priest of the area, Domingo Rivero, who will speak about the bicentennial celebration in 1996.
In addition to the celebrations in the different towns of the parish confirmed for July 15, 16, and 17 at 7:00 PM, on July 17 a recognition will be offered to Lázaro Martín at the Candelaria church and on July 18, at 12:30 PM, the holy eucharist will be celebrated with the participation of different parish priests.
