Presentation of the XXXIV Nanino Díaz Cutillas Festival

This Friday, September 13, the town of Mancha Blanca (Tinajo) will host the XXXIV edition of the Nanino Díaz Cutillas Festival, one of the most emblematic events surrounding the traditional Canarian identity that are celebrated annually in the Archipelago.

The Minister of Culture of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Jesús Machín, and the artistic director of the Festival, Benito Cabrera, presented this morning in the Plenary Hall the keys to this edition where the island will once again pay tribute to Fernando Díaz Cutillas, affectionately known as Nanino, who starred with his work an outstanding task in the dissemination and promotion of the island culture.

The president of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, Oswaldo Betancort, has underlined the importance of this cultural meeting around the patron saint festivities of the Virgin of Los Dolores: "The Nanino Díaz Cutillas Festival is a symbol of our Canarian identity and from the Cabildo of Lanzarote we will continue to bet decisively on our traditions."

For his part, the councilor Jesús Machín, who during the appearance greeted the representatives of the two Lanzarote groups that participate this year, Teguey and Malpaís de la Corona, has defined the Festival as “a cultural and identity reference that must be given the importance it deserves”; then emphasizing the importance of this “regional meeting place” around traditional music. He also spoke of the need for Lanzarote groups to rotate in their participation: “This festival is a unique opportunity to value our musical legacy and transmit it to new generations. Thanks to the work of all the artists and technicians involved, we can enjoy an event that connects us with our traditions.”

The renowned composer Benito Cabrera has detailed that the festival will be dedicated this year to the traditional instruments of the Canary Islands: “That will be the common thread of the show”, he said.  So we will see on stage how the sounds of the drum, the timple, the limpets, the castanets, the chácaras or the guitar, among others, are happening, in a journey through which the groups and soloists will take us. “This year, we wanted to pay tribute to the instruments that are part of our history, making them tell their deep connection with our islands”, commented Cabrera.

Participation from all points of the Archipelago

The Festival will feature the performance of renowned groups and soloists from all the islands of the archipelago, including the Malpaís de la Corona Folk Group and the Teguey Popular Music Group of Lanzarote; the Maxorata Folk Group of Fuerteventura; the Parranda Los Toledo from La Graciosa; the Echentive Folk Group, from La Palma; Choirs and Dances, from La Gomera; and artists such as Abraham Ramos, Juan Sebastián Ramírez and Patricia Muñoz from Gran Canaria, Angélica Pérez and Francisco Yanez from El Hierro, and Fabiola Socas, José Manuel Ramos and Jeremías Martín, from Tenerife.

The event promises to offer a unique experience, in which traditional Canarian instruments will become the protagonists of a musical and cultural journey through the roots and voices of Canarian folklore.

This festival is sponsored and organized by the Culture Area of the Island Council of Lanzarote, with the collaboration of the City Council of Tinajo. It will take place at 9:00 p.m. in Mancha Blanca, with free admission. For more information, you can consult the website www.culturalanzarote.com.
