The Order of the Canary Puppy in Lanzarote, in collaboration with the Pancho Lasso School of Art in Arrecife, is launching the Workshop on Riverside Carpentry: Naval Layout and Model Making, an initiative aimed at preserving and transmitting one of the traditional trades linked to the maritime history of Lanzarote.
The workshop will be taught by Agustín Jordán Romero, one of the last master riverside carpenters on the island. A disciple of Vicente Dorta Feo, he has an extensive career dedicated to traditional wooden construction and the restoration of classic and fishing boats. Throughout his professional life, he has designed and built nearly forty boats, ranging from small launches and dinghies to vessels fifteen meters long.
Workshop from September 5th to 30th in the afternoon
During the activity, students will learn the traditional fundamentals of naval layout and will participate in the assembly of the frames for a two-meter-long boat, made with marine plywood. The program will last eighty hours and will take place from October 5th to 30th, 2026, from Monday to Friday, between 4:00 PM and 8:00 PM, in the workshops of the Pancho Lasso School of Art.
The initiative is open to anyone interested, regardless of their age, education, nationality, or place of residence. Twelve places are offered, four of which are initially reserved for students of the School of Art. Admission will be on a strict first-come, first-served basis.
Enrollment period from September 2nd
The enrollment period will be open from this Wednesday, September 2nd, until September 30th. Registration must be completed in person at the Pancho Lasso School of Art, from Monday to Friday, between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM. The enrollment fee is 30 euros.
To complete the registration, it will be necessary to fill out the corresponding form and pay the enrollment fee to the account of the Order of the Canary Puppy in Lanzarote, indicating the participant's first and last names and, as the concept, Riverside Carpentry Workshop. If the twelve available places are exceeded, the amount will be refunded to those who do not get a spot, and the organization of a new edition will be considered.
The celebration of this workshop recovers and updates the collaboration between the Order of the Canary Puppy in Lanzarote and the Pancho Lasso School of Art. In 2013, coinciding with the centenary of the School, the Order granted it the Golden Puppy in recognition of its educational career and its contribution to the artistic and cultural training of the island.
Naval Construction Studies
The Pancho Lasso School of Art offered Naval Construction studies linked to the 1963 Study Plan until 2001. Although the River Carpentry specialty continues to be contemplated among the professional teachings of Plastic Arts and Design, it is currently not taught in any state art school.
The Order of the Canary Puppy in Lanzarote assumes the financing of the workshop, including the master's fees, materials, and student insurance. Akacenter Formación participates as a collaborating entity. At the end of the activity, attendees will receive a certificate issued by the organizing and collaborating entities and by the master Agustín Jordán Romero.
With this project, the Order aims to contribute to ensuring that the knowledge of river carpentry does not disappear and can be passed on to new generations. Depending on the reception obtained, it will be studied to turn the workshop into an annual activity, based at the Pancho Lasso School of Art.
