Maritime procession of Carmen in Valterra

The festivities in honor of Our Lady of Carmen bid farewell with the maritime procession in the seaside neighborhood of Valterra in Arrecife. At 5:30 p.m., the ringing of the bells of the Valterra church announced to its neighbors that the image of Our Lady of Carmen was leaving in procession to the Insular Hospital. A place where at 6:00 p.m. on the esplanade in front of the entrance staircase, the elderly, women and men residents waited, accompanied by healthcare personnel and family members to participate in the Eucharist presided over by Eduardo María Pérez, priest of the Archdiocese of Burgos.

The songs for the celebration were enlivened by the 'San Antonio Choir' of Tías, directed by Professor Carmen Dolores Rodríguez. Once the Eucharist was over, the procession was launched, headed by the 'Banda de Música La Unión del Pueblo' directed by Professor Pepe Artiles.

While the image of the Virgen del Carmen toured the avenue, Juan Rejón made a stop at the monument 'The Light that Guides Us', a tribute to the sailors who died at sea. The parishioners who participated in the procession experienced very emotional moments when the expected meeting took place between the two images and the women of Valterra, members of the 'Coro Iris del Mar', sang the Salve Marinera, a moment of recollection where many of those present remembered their deceased relatives. Therefore, they could not prevent the tears from flowing down their cheeks.

The procession began its course until it reached the 'Porto Nao' dock where the image of Carmen was received with the sound of the horns of the boats and the whistles of the cars while boarding the ship 'Princesa Ico' of the shipping company Líneas Romero, captained by Serafín Romero.

During the tour of the bay of Arrecife, Our Lady of Carmen was accompanied by the boats decorated for the occasion. In addition, when the delegation reached the height of the commercial dock, all the ships stopped, approaching the one carrying the Virgin and making a circle with the engines stopped. Afterwards, participate in the floral offering for the deceased sailors, ending with a prayer, thus heading back to Porto Nao where the image of Carmen was received.
