The César Manrique Foundation (FCM) will host the conference entitled 'Risks and adaptation to climate change on the Canary coast' on Thursday, October 26 at 7:30 p.m., in the José Saramago room (La Plazuela, Arrecife). It will be given by Íñigo Losada, an expert in coastal engineering, climate change and offshore energy. The event will be broadcast live through the FCM website and YouTube channel.
During his presentation, Losada will report on how in recent years scientific information, based on observations and the best available knowledge, is revealing that the ocean and, particularly, the coast, are experiencing significant changes and impacts induced by extreme events and other climate-related alterations.
According to the Professor of Hydraulic Engineering at the University of Cantabria, all these transformations, added to the high exposure and vulnerability of the natural and socioeconomic systems that the coast harbors, are "increasing the risks and unwanted consequences", making it necessary to "introduce adaptation measures" to address their reduction.
The researcher will present an assessment of the climate-related risks on the Canary coast based on the reports that have been prepared for this purpose. In addition, he will analyze the different strategies and adaptation measures that can be implemented. To do this, he will share concrete examples of actions that could be carried out both in the Canary Islands and on other national and international coasts.
Losada's presentation is included within the 'Frontiers and directions of progress' reflection space of the FCM. A forum aimed at reviewing the idea of progress contemplated from multidisciplinary perspectives, and in which Ramón Margalef, José Manuel Naredo, Federico Aguilera Klink, Fernando Savater, Jorge Riechmann, Rafael Argullol, Ulrich Beck, Marc Augé, Susan George, Daniel Innerarity, Joaquín Estefanía, Gloria Poyatos or Marta del Amo, among others, have already participated.
Iñigo Losada Rodríguez, one of the leading experts in our country and internationally on the impact of climate change, has actively participated in several reports of the 'Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change' (IPCC) of the United Nations and directed risk and adaptation studies to climate change in more than 30 countries, including several specific projects in the Canary Islands.
Losada is a Professor of Hydraulic Engineering at the University of Cantabria (UC); a civil engineer, and holds a PhD from the UC. He also has a PhD in Civil Engineering from the University of Delaware in the USA. He is also co-founder of the Environmental Hydraulics Institute of the UC, where he serves as Director of Research. His field of study is focused on coastal engineering, climate change and offshore energy.
He has received the following awards: 'Moffat & Nichol Award' for Port and Coastal Engineering, from the American Association of Civil Engineers (ASCE); 'Rei Jaume I Award' for Environmental Protection; the M. Selim Yalin for his professional career, awarded by the 'International Association for Hydro-Environment Engineering and Research' (IAHR); the 'Leonardo Torres Quevedo National Research Award' in Engineering and Architecture and the Lucas Mallada National Environment Award, among others. He is also a Full Member of the Royal Academy of Engineering of Spain and a member of the European Academy of Science.
