The César Manrique Foundation (FCM) will host on Thursday, September 17, at 7:30 PM, the intervention titled “More Poetry Needed” by artist and poet María Salgado. The event will take place in the Sala José Saramago (La Plazuela, Arrecife) and will be broadcast live via the FCM website and YouTube channel. Admission is free until full capacity is reached.
“More Poetry Needed” is the title of a piece by artist Jeremy Deller, a huge mural of white letters on a black background painted on the exterior brick wall of a large shopping center in Swansea, Wales (2014). It is also a common phrase, very close to everyday speech, which, however, affirms something almost entirely erased from our most common expectations today, according to Salgado.
“Wrapped in kilometers of language made or predicted by machines —fast, transparent, and ultra-fluid—, and in the midst of a gigantic global trade of signs, it sounds strange and anachronistic to ask for a bit of strangeness, disfluency, deviation, polysemy, ambiguity, and openness of meaning. Or poetry, and its charms and powers; and its impotences and difficulties,” explains the artist.
Based on this premise, and on research into contemporary and archaic forms of poetry collected in the essays El momento analírico (2023) and Lírica (2026), as well as constant poetic and scenic activity, María Salgado proposes a conversation around language, necessity, and poetry.
This intervention inaugurates a new FCM forum titled “Voices of Our Time,” conceived as a space that accommodates emerging creators from the national scene whose work has been recognized for its innovative capacity in areas such as visual arts, literature, cinema, architecture, photography… Through their proposals, these authors overflow the limits of conventional genres, explore new languages, and offer unprecedented ways of looking at reality and of understanding and materializing creative disciplines.
María Salgado is an artist and poet. Her work combines writing and performance in the search for a sound that reconnects with the world and desire, with the desire for the world. She is a professor of Art History at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Cuenca (UCLM), and is part of the Euraca Seminar, a collective for thought, reading, and writing on languages and crises.
Among her most recent publications are: Lírica, Orientada a Stein, REKORD, and Salitre, and the essay El Momento analírico. She has presented performances in museums such as MAC Montreal (De lengua Trois (three) pieces), WKV Stuttgart (Die 1, die eine 3 wurde), MACBA (Lírica/3), and the Reina Sofía Museum (Deja a ella probar), as well as in cultural centers and independent spaces in Spain, the United States, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, and Paraguay. Together with composer Fran MM Cabeza de Vaca, she created the trilogy of scenic works Jinete Último Reino, with which they toured numerous contexts such as the 39 Autumn Festival or the auawirleben Theaterfestival.
