The church of La Candelaria in Tías inaugurates its Nativity Scene

An event that featured the 'Rancho de Pascuas' from Haría

Nativity scene of La Candelaria church

The church of Nuestra Señora de La Candelaria located in the 'Upper Place' in the town of Tías has an extraordinary and artisan Nativity Scene.

Many neighbors attended the blessing and inauguration of the Nativity Scene that took place on Friday afternoon after the Eucharist presided over by the titular parish priest Adrián Sosa Nuez. A work made by hand by the neighbor Lázaro Martín, in charge for many years of the elaboration of the same and that every year surprises the visitors when recreating his totally handmade Nativity Scene. In it, the landscape of Lanzarote is very well reflected, respecting the traditional architecture of its houses painted white with its doors and windows with the green of Lanzarote, the sanded areas, the threshing floors where the farmer carried out the task of threshing, the salt flats with the salt piled up outside the cuts, the winery with the dam and its barrels, the shepherds and shepherdesses among the slopes and mountains taking care of their flock.

Also the fountain through which the crystalline water flows and at the top of the mountains you can already see their majesties the three Wise Men Melchor, Gaspar and Baltasar with the saddlebags on their camels well loaded with good wishes for adults and many toys for the little ones. And presiding over the Nativity Scene, in the souk of a stable, you can see Mary, Joseph and the child Jesus and very close giving them warmth, the ox and the mule. Lázaro Martín, still without finishing the sketch for this edition, is already planning what the one for next year will be like.

The finishing touch to such a special night was provided by the members of the Rancho de Pascua de Haría, performing Christmas carols. The municipality of Haría, like all those on the island, has enjoyed this folkloric-religious mode, of the 'Ranchos de Pascuas', and there are many people who have joined these groups, previously formed by men and currently with the incorporation of women, with a variable number between 10 and 20 members. As will be remembered, in the municipality of Haría up to three 'Ranchos de Pascuas' were counted, located in the towns of Haría, Máguez and Mala.
