The Department of Beaches of the Arrecife City Council has launched a new service of umbrellas and sunbeds on El Reducto beach this Tuesday.
The mayor of Arrecife, Yonathan de León, and the councilor for Beaches and Environment, Davinia Déniz, have traveled to the site, where the concessionaire company has deployed the 160 sunbeds and umbrellas, ten of which are intended to cover the needs of people with reduced mobility.
In addition, one of the new services that El Reducto beach offers to bathers allows people with reduced mobility to make free use of an accessible solarium platform, covered with shade. Furthermore, the surveillance and lifeguard staff, with prior request, offers assistance services to people with reduced mobility who require amphibious chairs to access the tidal zone.
Mayor Yonathan de León has detailed that the Arrecife City Council processed the concession of the beach service with Costas, which allowed the City Council to tender the management and installation of sunbeds and umbrellas in El Reducto. The mayor has underlined that "residents and tourists have always valued positively that El Reducto has these facilities to allow for greater comfort and longer stays at the beach".
El Reducto beach, which recently renewed its blue flag, was closed to swimming for six months due to sewage contamination in its waters. In fact, the beach's contamination had multiplied the maximum permitted E.Coli values by twelve. Last August, a new contamination episode, this time in the Punta del Camello area, led to the same beach being kept closed for a week.
A demand from local hoteliers
The councilor for Beaches, Davinia Déniz, has recalled that these services are also highly demanded by local hoteliers, as an added advantage to increase the occupancy rates of these accommodation establishments, mainly in the season that is now starting, autumn and winter (known in the Canary Islands as high season).
The awarded company will manage these services until December 31, 2029, as stated in the award on the Public Sector Procurement Platform. The Arrecife City Council emphasizes that the Department of Beaches tendered these services last spring.
The council has celebrated that both the companies offering trips to the island and the hotel managements have "shown their approval" for this main beach of the capital of Lanzarote to offer users services of hammocks and umbrellas. While it adds that they will also benefit tourist cruises.
The new service of hammocks and umbrellas is deployed this week, with the arrival of autumn, where the start of the cruise season is coinciding. The city of Arrecife will receive 100 calls before the end of the year, according to data from the Port Authority of Las Palmas.
