One more year, the International Oral Narration Festival Palabras al Vuelo lands on the cultural calendar of Lanzarote, which will bring together stories and emotions in venues across the island, between October 8 and 18. In its 14th edition, six storytellers from four countries and two continents will offer workshops and performances of free and open access, with content for adult and family audiences.
Wangari, from Kenya; Pepito Mateo, from France; Simone Negrín, from Italy; Pablo Albo, from Albacete, and Estrella Escriña, from Madrid, make up the multicolored stained glass window of stories, gestures, languages, and traditions that will ignite venues and landscapes in Arrecife, San Bartolomé, Tías, Haría, and Yaiza.
The councilors for Culture and Education of the Cabildo de Lanzarote and La Graciosa, Jesús Machín and Ascensión Toledo, invite the public to attend the various appointments with words, "which promote both quality leisure and reflection on issues that concern us, in the context of a festival uniquely rooted in popular appreciation."
As in previous editions of Palabras al vuelo, orality will speak languages, in order to bring the world of storytelling closer to the foreign population residing in Lanzarote, to the tourists who have chosen the island as a holiday destination, and to students of English, French, and Italian.
Places in the workshops and attendance at performances in small or natural spaces must be reserved through registration, which will open on September 28. The deposit, which will be scrupulously returned at the end of each event, will ensure that no audience is left without a ticket and no capacity is left uncovered. The only paid activity will be "Cuentos surcando las olas" (Stories Surfing the Waves), which, along with Simone Negrín's stories about The Decameron, includes a catamaran trip along the coast, a snack, and a musical performance by Angie&Eva.
The director of the festival, Cristina Temprano, highlights the consolidation of a cultural event that remains on the bill almost fifteen years after its premiere and maintains its small format, the contact between the public and the artists, and the power of imagination as raw material: "Faced with the winds of technology, hyperindividualism, and rejection of what is foreign to us, we promote the privilege of closeness, collective encounter, and the word as a tool for empathy and communication between peoples; the story as the great common language of global connection."
