The village of Nazareth, belonging to the municipality of Teguise, began its festivities in honor of Nuestra Señora de Nazaret on the afternoon of last Tuesday, at 8:00 PM, with an event that will hardly be forgotten by those who had the good fortune to attend.
The hall of the Ubigue Socio-Cultural Center was completely full to host the reading of the opening speech, an event presented by the center's president, local resident Pino Pérez, who welcomed authorities, neighbors, and visitors before giving way to a moment that, more than an opening speech, became an emotional, heartfelt, and well-deserved tribute to all the teachers who worked at the one-room schoolhouse in Nazareth from 1962 to the present day 2026.
From the first words, it was clear that the night would be marked by emotion. The Ubigue Socio-Cultural Center opened its doors and also its heart to pay tribute to those women who made the school much more than a place of learning.
During the reading, it was recalled how, since 1962, entire generations of boys and girls passed through the classrooms of the one-room schoolhouse. The desks, books, blackboards, and teaching methods changed, but what was truly important never changed; the dedication, commitment, and affection of teachers who arrived with a suitcase full of dreams and hands stained with chalk.
They taught reading, writing, addition, and subtraction, but also transmitted values that remain forever in those who were fortunate enough to learn alongside them; respect, solidarity, camaraderie, perseverance, and self-confidence.
They were the first to dry a tear on the first day of class, the ones who bandaged a scraped knee during recess, and the ones who knew every family, every path, and every story of this small village. Because educating in Nazareth was never just about imparting a lesson; it was about accompanying, listening, understanding, and sowing hope. It was about staying a few extra minutes when needed. It was about teaching love for the roots, traditions, and identity of a people proud of their history.
Many of those students are now fathers, mothers, and even grandparents, but they still remember a word of encouragement, a smile, a timely correction, or a hug received from their teachers. That, without a doubt, is the greatest success of a teacher; to remain forever in the memory and in the hearts of those they helped to grow.
The tribute culminated with a simple but meaningful message.
Thank you for your silent dedication. Thank you for your infinite patience. Thank you for believing in entire generations of boys and girls. Thank you for making a school a family. Because the peoples who know where they come from. Nazaret does not forget. Nazaret honors them. Nazaret remembers them. Nazaret will always carry them in its heart.
One of the most emotional moments of the evening was the presence of three of the honored teachers, who received a framed photograph and a bouquet of flowers from the festival committee as a token of the affection and gratitude of the entire town of Nazaret.
Other teachers who could not travel to Lanzarote because they currently reside off the island, but were also very present through emotional video messages, projected on a screen and followed with great attention and emotion by the public.
And after the reading of the proclamation, the three present teachers shared a heartwarming meeting with some of their former students, who did not hesitate to embrace them with hugs, kisses, and photographs full of memories, reliving for a few moments those unforgettable years of the one-room schoolhouse of Nazaret.
Visibly moved, the president of the Ubigue Socio-Cultural Center, Pino Pérez, thanked the attendance of the honored teachers, the municipal authorities, and all the neighbors who completely filled the center's capacity, demonstrating the enormous affection that Nazaret feels for those who dedicated their lives to teaching.
The musical finale of the night was provided by the Calicanto Musical Group, which offered a varied and lively repertoire that was highly applauded by the numerous audience, bringing a close to an evening full of feelings and memories.
Without a doubt, for many residents of Nazaret, it was much more than the reading of a proclamation. It was a journey into the past, a reunion with childhood, with desk mates, with the lifelong school, and above all, with those teachers who left an indelible mark on several generations.
Thus began the festivities in honor of Our Lady of Nazaret, with an event that is now part of the town's history. A night in which affection, gratitude, and emotion were palpable from the first to the last minute, reminding us that there are tributes that not only recognize a career but also return memory and heart to an entire town.
