The Cabildo of Lanzarote presented this Thursday, July 28, at the Farmer's Monument, the literary work of Itxaso Elorduy, entitled "Lava y Arena. The heroic agriculture of Lanzarote". This book, financed by the Island Institution, tells the story of the transformation of the agricultural economy of the Island as told by its farmers and elders.
The work narrates in chronological order the development of the sector, with stories of the volcanic eruption and its consequences on the unique orography of the Guanche island, reaching 2020, with the return to the countryside of young farmers motivated by the pandemic, who have decided to produce cheeses, oils or wines with traditional techniques of great quality, both in Lanzarote, as in other parts of Spain.
The writer herself was present at the event, among others, who thanked the attendees for their presence and the support of the First Institution to publish this narration of the historical course of the most important sector in the conejero development.
María Dolores Corujo wanted to congratulate her for this "endearing" work, highlighting that "there is no better way to describe the evolution of the sector that has brought us to what we are today than through the eyes of those who have lived it".
For his part, Alberto Aguiar highlighted "the cultural value of Elorduy's book, which not only provides a more human vision of agriculture through its testimonies and the passage of time, but also tells how the inhabitants of Lanzarote transformed the tragedy and the land, apparently infertile, into a living field with a unique singularity, just as César Manrique did to create mythical spaces that would put the Canary Island at the head of international tourism".
