Procession in Las Breñas in celebration of the day of San Luis Gonzaga

The town of Las Breñas dressed up to celebrate this Wednesday, June 21, its Big Day, the day of San Luis Gonzaga, the saint chosen by its community as Patron of the town of Lanzarote, historically very linked by proximity and work of its women and men to the Salinas de Janubio, the chromatic productive mantle that can be seen from its moderate height.

Faithful and companions participated in the solemn function in honor of San Luis Gonzaga presided over by the parish priest of the municipality of Yaiza, Jonathan Almeida, and then once the celebration of the Eucharist was over, they went out in procession through streets near the town square next to the figure of the Saint. In addition, the Yaiza Municipal Band encouraged the pilgrimage.

Óscar Noda and some of the councilors of the newly constituted Municipal Corporation joined the religious festival that ended in front of the church with the sensitive musical offering of the Parranda Janubio, a group born in Las Breñas that already has 37 years of artistic career embellishing the folklore of the Canary Islands under the direction of Clotildo Martín.

The director of Janubio had words of encouragement for the soloist and one of the founders of the parranda and representative voice of the traditional singing of the Islands, Leonardo Cabrera, who is recovering from an illness.

The current image of San Luis Gonzaga de Las Breñas was donated in 1980 by the doctor from Salamanca, Eduardo Lamamié, who was working in Lanzarote at the time, being parish priest of Yaiza, Manuel Merchán. The neighbor of Femés, Paco Pérez, recalled the fact at the end of the procession.

After the religious events, Las Breñas put an end to its festivities this 2023 enjoying the concert of the rocanrolera band Los Lola in the town square.
